Artiste Profile

Frederic D Berjot

Bold, brash, brave and always surprising, Berjot's passion and artistic belief are alive in his work. Frederic Berjot was born in Paris in 1963 to a French Italian background, which made for a passionate and creative family lifestyle. His creative pursuits started at a very young age, demanding that his room not be wall papered, the walls were to be left bare.

This way he could cover the entirety of the walls in sketches and drawings of people and nature. "....these were my first palettes, my first canvases. Capturing every mood, desire and moment that I had in my childhood." Studying at "Atelier des Arts" in Paris then continuing his education as assistant to Sculptor, Architect and Film Maker - Patrick Mazery, Berjot kept unraveling his passion for sculpture, and commenced to open his studio "Musee de Rire" in Ile St Louis, Paris. This was the embarkment of the life size figures that are recognised today.

New York called Berjot in 1988. Pursuing an international status he exhibited in Soho. Mixing with, and discovering, the world of the New York art scene. Berjot lived and exhibited in New York for over a year until he returned to Paris to work on France's Bicentenary projects as a special effects technician during the day and focusing heavily on his own personal projects at night. This passionate young sculptor had the dream to create a space where people of all ages and persuasions could enjoy art. "I spent some years listening to my teachers telling me that to be a sculptor you need to weld with metal, so I did this. The large abstract architectural forms, I felt were incomplete, so I moved into body casting and figurative representation.

Feeling free from any academic conservative should be so I took a vividly new start." Arriving in Australia in 1989 the dream appeared to unfold. Berjot opened his first studio in Australia in Parhan, Melbourne enticing many a brave recruit to be a part of history in the making. Studying to further his knowledge at the National Art School in Sydney, Berjot opened his studio which is known today as "The Laughing Museum", here was the birthplace of one of Australia's most successful and characteristic sculpture studios, the forefront of daring and exciting portraiture trend. The immediacy, technical refinement and sometimes provocative nature of Berjot's work has ensured its appeal to many people from all walks of life and from all around the world.

A strong desire to see art touch the lives of a greater part of the population and his love of the human figure, form the basis of his philosophical inspiration. Underneath Berjot's art lies the dedication of a volcanically driven man, who is at odds with conformity and convention. He believes that as an artist he must speak truely of the human condition, sometimes with splendor often troubled and tragic. It is a religion: the human body which he describes as a temple that marches among architecture.Berjot's work is influenced by artists such as John De Andrea, George Segal, Juan Monoz, Anthony Gormely and great Masters - to name a few.
